Our Science Based Targets are set and approved!

Written by Lode Verbruggen

There it is! We are finally here: our science-based targets are set and approved, and BrightWolves is ready to go all-in! With the support of the entire Wolfpack, we plan to reduce our 2019 emissions by at least 46% before 2030.

What do we mean by Science Based Targets?

Science-based targets are emissions reduction targets in line with what, the latest climate science says, is needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement - to limit global warming to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi defines and promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets.

How did we end up here?

From the beginning, we wanted our sustainability journey to be sincere and ambitious and claim a frontrunner position in the Belgian landscape. This means we must set clear goals, act upon them, and influence our network to do the same.

Making fact-based decisions is part of our core, so opting for science-based reduction targets was a logical decision as it allows us to plan, act and report transparently, based on verifiable data.

We first encountered the Science Based Target initiative through the Belgian Alliance for Climate action (BACA). This national initiative brings the private sector and academic institutions together to take the lead in climate action. In BACA’s network, experience and knowledge are shared to push every member to be ambitious and transparent. For us, being a BACA member kept us on our toes while allowing us to inspire others with our journey.
