The difference a bike can make

Written by Vincent Govaers

One week before the European Mobility Week, we want to take a closer look at how an invention that was made in 1885, can still make a difference for your company. Let us take a moment to celebrate one of our favorite technologies: the bike.

At the start of the year, we spent a couple of minutes to order some bikes at Swapfiets for Business. Even though, the weather at that time of the year is usually not at its best, we quickly tested and approved our new bikes. In just the blink of an eye, the bikes replaced our cars as way to run some errands in the neighborhood of our office.

A healthy mind, in a healthy body, in a healthy company

At BrightWolves, we are convinced that having bikes at the office can help you to push your company to the next level. It is probably one of the easiest ways to bring a happy, healthy atmosphere to your working environment. We were able to experience ourselves that a small bike ride during lunch is a perfect break for a couple of reasons:

  • A regular day at the office can make it difficult to find enough time to exercise. Riding a bike every day does not only give you the physical exercise you need, but also helps you to stay mentally fresh the entire day. A study from the University of Glasgow showed that people score significantly higher on memory and reasoning test after riding a bike for 30 minutes. And beside the better result, they completed the tests faster too.

  • Getting lunch or going to clients by bike is a great way to spend some time with your colleagues. Conversations tend to be a little more informal and fresh air and daylight put an immediate smile on everyone’s face. This provides your employees with a straight dopamine injection, ready to take on challenges during the whole day.

  • Last but not least, bikes are environmental and economical heroes. Not only will you save tonnes of carbon dioxide on a yearly basis by leaving the car aside, but you will also save costs on gas and maintenance as most cars are not built to make short trips.

We must admit that calculating the exact costs you would save is not as straightforward as stated above. But, buying bikes for your office is still a very small investment to build a healthier work environment for all your employees. Even in ancient Rome they knew that a healthy mind in a healthy body is the key to boosting each person’s productivity and creativity. Isn’t that something you would want for your team too?

Going the extra mile

To prepare ourselves fully for the European Mobility Week, we ordered some additional Swapfiets e-bikes encouraging everyone to take place on the saddle. Those two-wheelers will certainly help our colleagues to recharge their own batteries during the week. And besides a positive influence on everyone’s mood, also our business as a whole will profit. Swapfiets bikes are the perfect example on how your sustainable transformation can be easy and fun!
